Your teeth and gum health are more than just flashing a winning smile. Properly caring for your teeth is critical for the health of other bodily systems, too. Poor brushing techniques, failure to floss, and avoiding regular dental checkups can lead to other health problem. In some serious cases blood infections and heart problems can occur if left unchecked for too long.
What’s the right way to brush your teeth? It starts with picking the right toothbrush and toothpaste
In general, you’ll want to pick a toothpaste that includes fluoride. Fluoride is the ultimate ingredient in toothpaste for fighting against dental decay. Most tubes of toothpaste sold today will have fluoride in them, but it’s a good idea to double-check to be sure.
For the deepest cleaning from home, use an electric or powered toothbrush. When using an electric toothbrush, apply to the area and let the toothbrush do the cleaning. We aware of the power of the electric toothbrush, don’t be overly forceful when using it. For brushes, a soft-bristled brush with rounded tips is ideal. While a hard-bristled brush may feel like you’re able to remove more buildup, it can damage your teeth and weaken your enamel. Hard bristled toothbrushes can also irritate your gums.
Replace your toothbrush when?
Anytime the bristles of your toothbrush become frayed you’ll want to replace it. Ideally, you should get a new toothbrush every three to four months.
What’s the right way to brush your teeth when using a manual toothbrush? Use the right technique for brushing
Brushing motion, angle and amount of toothpaste
You’ll want to use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the brush. Be sure to angle the brush at 45 degrees and place the bristles at the gum line. Use a gentle, circular motion to brush, and avoid brushing too hard. Vigorous, harsh brushing can lead to a receding gum line.
Length of time and frequency
Clean every surface of the tooth, including the tongue side, cheek-side, and chewing surface. You should be brushing between two to three minutes, at least twice per day. Also, alternate the hand you use to clean. For example, use your right hand for the morning brush, and then the left for after dinner. It might feel awkward to brush with the non-dominant hand, but it will help you clean every surface of the teeth without missing any from brushing at the same angle all the time.
Reverse motion to ensure all surfaces are cleaned
If switching hands is too awkward, you can try alternating the motion that you brush in. If you normally use a forward circular motion, alternate with a backward circular motion to ensure the bristles of your brush reach every surface and space between your teeth.
What’s the Right Way to Brush Your Teeth? Don’t forget to floss!
Flossing is super important for tooth and gum health. Be sure to floss between the teeth in a “C” shape at least once per day, preferably after your last meal. Swipe the floss at the tooth base about two or three times to properly clean the gum line.
Flossing devices and instruments
Floss picks are a great way to motivate yourself to floss more regularly; they can be used just like a toothpick to remove stuck food from between your teeth. However, for the best-at-home clean between your teeth, invest in a water flosser. The device will spray water between your teeth and along the gum line for a comfortable, fresh cleaning, while being incredibly gentle on your mouth.
Visit the dentist for regular checkups
Children should see the dentist every six months, while adults should go at least once per year. Regular checkups give the dentist a chance to uncover any dental problems before they become painful or cause permanent damage. At a routine checkup, your dentist will also be able to professionally clean your teeth for even greater dental health and a bright smile.
