How to get your child to brush their teeth

How to get your child to brush their teeth - Pediatric Dentistry - Mouth Health - Winnipeg Dental Clinic - Regent Avenue Dental CentreProper oral hygiene is critical for kids. Not only does properly brushing teeth prevent cavities, which are the most common preventable childhood disease for children aged 6-11 and teens aged 12-19, but encouraging your kids to brush their teeth properly from a young age will encourage good life-long oral hygiene habits. Cavities also affect adults, with 9/10 people over the age of 20 suffering from some degree of tooth-root decay.

In this article, the team at Regent Avenue Dental Centre will cover some of our top tricks to answer the age-old question “how can I get my kid to brush their teeth?”

Let them pick out their toothbrush and toothpaste

Kids love having options and making decisions. Letting them choose their own toothbrush and flavor of toothpaste is a great way to make the twice-daily task of teeth brushing more fun!

With the release of every new movie, or tv/streaming series, there is the inevitable flood of merchandise. Let your children pick a toothbrush that features their current favorite character – they’ll look forward to brushing with it! You can also look for toothbrushes and toothpaste marked with the CDA seal of approval to make sure you’re using high-quality products.

Make a reward chart

A reward chart with gold stars (or any type of sticker or stamp) marking every day your kids brush their teeth is a great way to encourage them to brush consistently. When you reach 30 stars, you can reward your kid with a toy, a trip to their favorite restaurant, or another such treat!

Having a reward system for regular brushing can help your child build a habit of good dental health and creates a positive feeling towards brushing their teeth.

Learn about teeth together

You can check out books from the library, watch YouTube videos about dentistry and teeth, and learn more about why cleaning teeth is so important. Kids love learning, and when they understand why brushing is a big deal, they’re more likely to form good dental hygiene habits.

Visiting with and speaking to your family dentist regularly will help your child build a positive relationship with them. This can also help resolve or minimize any possible negative feelings your child may have and dispel any myths or mistruths they may have picked up from their peers.

You and your kids can brush together. Make sure that you brush properly for at least 2 minutes and have fun! You can make up a tooth-brushing song, play music, have a dance party – whatever you want. Just make sure to lead by example and show your kids how important it is to brush their teeth properly and regularly.

See a dentist as soon as your child’s first teeth come out!

Seeing the dentist from a very early age makes it easier to manage our child’s dental care, and it gets them to feel more comfortable and familiar at the dentist’s office. Your child should start seeing the dentist once their first teeth erupt, or at the age of 1 year – whichever comes first!
